First Week of School!

It has been great meeting so many of you during the Welcome Walk and Back to School Night. I am so excited to start this year with such a wonderful group of kids! During the first week of school, Ms. Leining and I will spend quite a bit of time building community in our classes and getting to know one another. We have lots of games and activities planned to do this. In math this week, students will begin a place value and number sense unit. During science, they will discuss what science is and go over science rules/procedures. We will use our social studies time to build community and relationships with one another. In language arts, students will set-up materials for our reading and writing workshops. We will also begin talking about personal narratives in writing and fictional texts in reading. Please set aside some time on Monday evening to go through the two parent-student handbooks that will be sent home with your child. There are important pages that need to be filled out and returned as soon as possible. Your child will come home with an agenda every night and is expected to bring the agenda back to school every morning. Students will record homework assignments and fill out a reading log in their agenda every day. I am asking every fourth grader to read at least 20 minutes every night beginning Monday. In addition to reading, your child will have an "About Me" homework assignment the first week of school. We will go over the homework with everyone on Monday, and it is due Thursday, August 29th. On Monday morning, all students will go directly to their homeroom classes. Beginning Tuesday, all fourth graders who arrive between 7:20 and 7:40 will report to the computer lab for morning literacy. I look forward to seeing everyone bright and early Monday morning.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. My door is always open. Have a wonderful weekend!
